Should music be treated as seriously as subjects like maths and sciences at school?

I think it should be. I believe music is a branch of science. It's also been scientifically proven that the ability to read music can help students understand math better. But I don't think they should be encouraged to play instruments or to play things by ear at the school because it can lead to them playing too much, causing them to fall behind with their studies.
